The Top 7 New Leadership skill sets for Success In the New Economy: Part 1 of 8
Not Just Another Pretty Face! Part 1 of 2
Sandra Bullock is loved for her movie roles and sense of humor. She delights audiences around the world and is thought of as “America’s sweetheart.” (Sandy, I don’t really know what that means…America’s sweetheart…I’m just sayin that’s what they say…I’m not even sure who the “they” are that are saying it. I just thought I would throw that in for good measure.) But seriously, what I like about Sandra is, she is also one great business woman, humanitarian and leader. She has had to have fabulous leadership skills in order to get to the position and wealth level she enjoys.
So what does Sandra Bullock know about new leadership skills that help her thrive in this new economy? Despite all the press Sandra has had over her divorce from Jesse James, Sandra rises above and thrives because she understands the new leadership skills and values and she lives by them. In the new economy leadership has changed and if you are using the old model skill sets you will fall behind. As we create a new economy, a new era and a new millennium, leadership is everything and under a lot of scrutiny. People are vigilantly watching leaders.
Leadership and mindset are taking a turn in the world today as we are recovering from the marginal leadership of the past. Today, people all over the world are looking at leadership from a very different perspective. Many people are distrusting, cynical and vigilantly monitoring the moves of every leader from their churches, to their bosses, to their schools, leadership is under fire. People are scared, questioning and emotionally tired wondering how they are going to turn their circumstances around after losing everything. I think we have gone through the largest leadership crisis in history.
Damage Control from the Past Leadership
From ponzi schemes to bank bailouts to mortgage schemes, wall street crisis, unemployment crisis, the health crisis, weapons of mass destruction, terrorism crisis, global warming crisis, peak oil crisis to the BP oil spill crisis. It appears that “crisis” seems to be a daily word used to describe the world. Stress is high and there are people that are yelling “Armageddon, Armageddon” and others that are yelling, “Law of attraction, Law of attraction,” either way it is only with thoughtful leadership of yourself, your mindset, your work life or company that is going to help change your circumstances.
Leadership is different and the old model will not work now because many people no longer believe the leaders of that era or their systems. No one wants to hear another leader tout again how “fear” is “false evidence appearing real,” or there is no “I” in team as if we had never heard thousands of other leaders say the same thing to us hoping to impress us with their leadership acumen.
Ethics Crisis
To me, if we had any “crisis,” it was an ethics crisis. Some charismatic, well educated savvy leaders took advantage of and walked on the blind trust of others in order to benefit and line their pockets with wealth. Somehow they must have thought that they could not get ahead by doing business fairly. Somehow they knew that the good hearted, honest and hard working middle class were not aware of the intentions of the unethical leaders.
These rotten apple leaders used all of the most popular and effective leadership tools and techniques. These unethical leaders used these tools to convince stockholders, managers and staff that they, as a leader, were the person to trust and follow. These unscrupulous leaders were highly effective, went from good to great, they had the right people on the bus, knew about success habits, knew how to swim with (and become) the sharks, and had persuasion techniques along with having success principles and laws. And when they used these highly regarded leadership techniques we watched in amazement as stocks went up. People believed, had hope and felt optimistic until the wolf came out of his sheep’s clothing.
What do we do now?
Our downfall was that we naively believed that these leaders were as honest, forthright and ethical as we are. It’s not only jobs, homes, savings, stocks and retirement losses that plague people right now, it’s wondering where to go, what to do and whom to trust. Whose advice, whose leadership, whose directions are ethical and honest? Every night we read how there are unethical people taking advantage of a crisis situation by developing scams and other fraudulent schemes. Once again, someone thinks they can’t get ahead by doing business fairly. Instead they think that they have to cheat, lie and steal.
Sure we can go to our church and religious leaders for comfort, solace and direction and find that we have to look out for the “priests that are pedophiles,” “heads of evangelicals” that want to be called “straight with issues,” pastors under investigation for domestic violence and even murder.
Stepping Up to Take Your Turn at Bat
The aftermath of this just looks like doom and gloom to most people in the world. Yet, oh how the mighty have fallen. We have lanced one of the biggest boils on the planet and now it can begin to heal. We can begin to clean it up and create something new, stronger, healthier and more beneficial to everyone. This may not be easy but it is what is here now. Leaders monitor and keep the pulse of what’s happening in order to steer the ship in a direction. Leaders have vision and creativity along with a willingness to step out first.
If this is you and you are looking to be the leader of tomorrow right NOW, because that is when we need it most, then you are in one of the greatest opportunities of a life time.
